Becky Jo Harris is an actor and writer working and living in Los Angeles. Born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, she trained in theatrical acting and received her bachelor's in Fine Arts and Psychology from Arizona State University. She has now acted for over 10 years on a variety of sets for film, television, stage plays, and more commercials than she can count.

Where are you from?

Hi there! I’m from Phoenix, AZ. I moved to LA around 5 years ago, and have been splitting my time between the two states. The moment I knew it was time to move to LA and start building my career there, was when I started feeling like I was a big fish in a small pond. I always want to push my limits, so it felt right to be a small fish in a big pond out in LA. Now I feel kind of like a somewhat medium fish…

What do you consider to be your major creative influences across genres?

I get a lot of my inspiration from so many different people so it’s hard to narrow it down, but if I had to pick I’d say, Lucille Ball, Tony Hale, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Rowan Atkinson, Alan Tudyk, slap stick comedy in general, and Andy Warhol/the pop art movement.

What’s your favorite scary story, across mediums?

I can’t stop thinking about As Above So Below. I’m a huge fan of horror, and it takes a bit to affect me, so the fact that movie stuck with me is saying something.

How do you feel about the current explosion of horror media? Where do you think it’s stemming from?

I think that there has always been a fascination when it comes horror and the unexplained. And now, I think due to the ability to produce more for less, people are letting their imaginations free. Coming back to where I think it’s stemming from, I think humans have a natural curiosity for the dark and the unknown, the need to uncover what’s out there. A sort of morbid curiosity for things that probably should be left well enough alone…

What advice do you have for creatives that are just starting out?

My advice is to find something that sparks your interest, do it, and then keep finding things that spark your interest, and never stop.

Is there a particular craft/program you feel you’ve learned the most from?

Honestly, without a doubt, improvisation. Taking improv classes always scared me. But once I pulled off that Band-Aid, it opened me up to being more create, finding more opportunities, and basically brought me back to why I wanted to be a performer in the first place.

If you could’ve been a part of any horror movie, what would that movie be and who would you play? Why?

Definitely The Shining, playing the role of Wendy Torrance. Watching Shelley Duvall give such an impactful performance is most of the reason why I would love to play that role. And as an actor that role has so much meat too. I think it would be interesting to delve into that character. Plus, haunted hotels are kind of an obsession of mine. Lol
